The Faculty of Education was established on 01st February 2003 as the fourth Faculty of the OUSL ( In the University system there are only two Faculties of this kind). It currently consists of three Departments: Department of Secondary & Tertiary Education, Department of Early Childhood and Primary Education and Department of Special Needs Education. The Faculty offers a multitude of programmes, all of which lead to the award of Certificates, Diplomas, Degrees or a Post Graduate Diplomas /Degrees. In addition Faculty offers three short courses namely 1) Short Course on Research Methodology, 2) Teaching Children with Learning Disabilities and 3) Inclusive Education. A new course on Multi-grade Teaching will commence in March 2012.

The mission of Faculty of Education is to:
- achieve excellence in research and scholarship in the field of Education
- prepare professionals for service and leadership roles in education and related areas
- constructively inform educational policy makers and to critically appraise educational policy in Sri Lanka
- contribute to curriculum development in general and teacher education in particular
- support society to identify and respond to its educational responsibilities and challenges
