Bachelor of Education Degree (Natural Sciences) |

The Department of Secondary & Tertiary Education of the Faculty of Education offers this programme of study, jointly with the Faculty of Natural Sciences. It is a four academic year programme, of which the first two years (Levels 3 and 4) will be devoted to the teaching of Science subjects and the last two years (Levels 5 and 6) to Education subjects. It is a 8 credit programme in which candidates are required to acquire two credits at each of the levels.

| Aims and Objectives |
- To provide opportunities for further education for non-graduate science teachers in the education system
- To provide opportunities for higher education for those who are qualified to enter but do not get a place in a conventional university.
- To provide professional qualification for science gradautes who are willing to enter the teaching profession.

| Admission Requirements |
|
Admission to Level 3/Level 4 please refer section 10.2 and 12 of the Natural Science Faculty Prospectus.
Admission to Level 5
- Eligibility in all courses ( 4 credits) at Levels 3, and 4 (a maximum of 1/3 credits could be earned
- Passes in courses equal to 2 1/2 credits at Levels 3, 4 and 5 (a maximum of 1/3 credits could be earned from level 5 of the B.Sc. Degree Programme to complete requirements at level 4).
Admission to Level 6 Student will be eligible to register for courses at Level 6 of the B.Ed. (Nat. Sc.) Degee Programme on the acquisition of;
- Eligibility in all courses ( 4 credits) at Levels 3, and 4 (a maximum of 1/3 credits could be earned from Level 5 of the B.Sc. Degree Programme and
- Passes in courses equal to 3 credits at Levels 3 and 4 (a maximum of 1/3 credits could be earned from level 5 of the B.Sc. Degree Programme to complete requirements at level 4). and
- Eligibility in all courses (2 credits) at Levels 5 (B.Ed.) or
- Exemption in all courses ( 2 credits) at Level 5 (B.Ed.)
A student who registers for the Degree of Bachelor of Education Programme must register for a minimum of 1/2 credits per academic year. The maximum a student can register for an one academic year is 2 credits.
A student may not register for a course at a particular level unless a specified number of credits or eligibility has been obtained at the preceding level or is exempted from the requirement of obtaining the credits by virtue of other qualifications.
Note:
Students who have registered for Level 5/6 of the B.Ed. (Nat. Sc.) Degree Programme, are required to obtain a minimum of RE grades for those courses for which they have obtained eligibility only, at Levels 3 and 4, in order to qualify for the final award.

| Exemptions |
|
Candidates may be exempted from the requirement of obtaining credits in certain courses by virtue of other qualifications.
Exemptions should normally be claimed during registration. The maximum number of credits a student can claim exemption from the B.Ed. (Nat. Sc.) programme, is four.
A student granted an exemption from a particular course of study will be deemed to have obtained a final mark of 40 and a PD grade in that particular course, irrespective of whatever mark he/she may have received at an equivalent course/examination.

| Media of Instruction |
|
The media of instruction at level 3 are Sinhala, Tamil and English. A student may choose any one of these. The courses at level 4 will be in English. Courses at Levels 5 and 6 will be in Sinhala, Tamil and English.

| Evaluation |
|
Evaluation of this programme includes continuous assessment, laboratory work, fieldwork, teaching practice, project, observation and final examination.
A student’s progress is assessed continuously throughout the course by means of assignments and at the end of the course by means of a Final Examination. Performance at continuous assessment will be considered in deciding the eligibility to sit the Final Examination
