Master of Education

This programme of study is a fifty four credits programme.  A candidate should acquire the 54 credits within a minimum of 1 ½ academic years, not necessarily consecutive, provided the student maintains registration throughout.  The total number of credits to be earned by a student during one year shall not exceed 36.

The objectives of the programme are,

  • To expand the opportunities for higher studies in education for those who are already serving in the field of education.
  • To enable personnel already serving in higher educational institutions to obtain specializedknowledge in fields relevant to their professions by offering a variety of new subjects.
  • To promote research in areas relevant to the development of education.

 

Admission Requirements

The minimum entry requirement for the Master of Education Degree Programme is as follows: 

1. Either a first degree in Education (BEd) with at least a second class (lower division) from a recognized University. or

2. A pass with at least a merit at the Post Graduate Diploma in Education from a recognized University

3.      (a) A pass in the Post Graduate Diploma in Education from the Open University of Sri Lanka with “A” or “B” grades in course adding up to a minimum of 2 ½ credits.  (Old syllabus – before 2001)

        (b) A pass in the A pass in the Post Graduate Diploma in Education from the Open University of Sri Lanka with “A” or “B” grades in course adding up to a minimum of 1 ½ credits.  (New syllabus)

4. A pass in Bachelor’s Degree in Education (Natural Sciences) offered by the Open University of Sri Lanka, with

(i) “A” or “B” grades in courses up to a minimum of 4 credits in any of the courses, inclusive of at least 2 credits in courses at levels 5 & 6 or

(ii) With a exemptions up to 2 credits at Level 5, with  A or B grades in courses up to a minimum of 4 credits in any of the courses, inclusive of atleast 1 ½ credits in courses at Level 6. or

4. A pass at least with a merit in the Post Graduate Diploma in Education from the Open University of Sri Lanka, or

5. A pass at least with a merit in the Post Graduate Diploma in Special Needs Education from the Open University of Sri Lanka  or

6. Secured any equivalent qualification acceptable to the Senate

Registration and period of Study

In order to register for the degree of Master of Education programme a person shall have satisfied the pre-requisites for admission specified in the regulations for the award of the Degree of Master of Education.

A student who registers for the M.Ed. Programme will normally be expected to complete the programme within 5 academic years of registration.  However the minimum registration period would be 18 months.

The programme consists of both course work and research.  The course work comprises 3 compulsory courses and one optional course.

Choice of optional courses depends on the availability of staff and number of students requesting a course.

Research
Each student is required to conduct a minor investigation and submit a research dissertation on a topic approved by the Open University.

Evaluation

Evaluation includes the following

  1. Continuous assessment by means of compulsory assignments.
  2. Written examination at the end of each academic year.  (The eligibility to sit the final examination will depend on the marks obtained for the CA assignments). 
  3.  Assessment of the Research Dissertation.   

Final awards will be given in accordance with the rules and regulations of the Open University of Sri Lanka.
