The Department conducts two Post Graduate Programmes namely Master of Philosophy  and Doctor of Philosophy in Education.Particulars regarding M.Phil. and Ph.D. degrees are summarised below.

Programme Minimum duration Entry qualification

M.Phil.
2 Completion of M.Ed./MATE/MATE (Int.) or 65% average at M.Ed. examination
Ph.D. 3 Completion of M.Phil., or transferred if the qualify of the M.Phil. study and the research seminar presentation is satisfactory.

The Department attempts to select the students with proven research ability and potential to contribute to high quality research in education for the research degrees.  The students are chosen only for those areas for which expert guidance is available in the Department.  To ensure that the theses submitted are of high quality and make an original contribution to knowledge, they are subjected to examination by independent examiners, one of whom is preferably fromoutside Sri Lanka.  The students also face a viva voce examination before a Panel of Examiners. These two programmes are offered in three media: Sinhala, Tamil and English.

Completion and enrolment  

So far, three students have been awarded Ph.D. degree and five students have been awarded M.Phil. degrees by the Faculty.  Four students are  presently  registered  and five have submitted the proposals for consideration for  the M.Phil.  Programme.

Supervision

A research student who pursues either a  M.Phil. or a Ph.D. programme is assigned two to three supervisors depending on the nature of his/her research study.  Only the senior academics are permitted to supervise the research students.  The number of research students assigned to each supervisor depends on their field of specialization, and teaching and administrative commitments.

In addition to this, students have to pay a supplementary fee which will be decided by the Faculty.
