| Diploma in Technology |
The Diploma in Technology programme of the OUSL (along with the NDT, NDES and the HNDE programmes at other institutions) is one of the main avenues for entry to middle-level technical grades within the engineering profession. However, unlike the other programmes, it is open to working students. The minimum duration of the Diploma programme is three years and the medium of instruction is English. However, courses at Levels 1 and 2 are offered in Sinhala, Tamil, and English.
For the award of the Diploma in Technology, it is possible for a student to select any combination of courses meeting the requirements given in Table 04, subject to meeting the pre-requisites for each course, indicated in the Complete List of Courses.
However, particular selections of compulsory courses, including those given Table 05 will entitle the students to be awarded the Diploma with specialisation in one of the following areas:
Agricultural Engineering Civil Engineering Computer Engineering Electrical Engineering Electronic and Communication Engineering Mechanical Engineering Mechanical Engineering (Automobile) Mechanical Engineering (Manufacturing) Mechatronics Engineering* Textile Engineering
*Students intake to the newly introduced Mechatronics stream is limited. The Department of Mechanical Engineering will select a limited number of students for this specialisation through an appropriate selection process. Those who are interested should contact the Department of Mechanical Engineering for further details.

The Faculty expects a student who has been awarded the Advanced Certificate in Technology to be:
* Competent in the application of the well-known principles of engineering technology,
* Aware of social, environmental and economic issues related to technology, and
* Self-motivated and capable of further advancement.
The courses selected for the award of the Diploma in Technology shall be so as to meet the minimum requirements in each category as shown in Table 02. If the credits gained in any category exceeds the maximum limit shown, only such maximum shall be used in computing the total credits.
