Industrial Training

Diploma and Degree programmes in Technology (Engineering) include Basic Training and Specific Industrial Training as compulsory courses.   For programmes in Industrial Studies only the Specific Industrial Training course is compulsory.  

Basic Training comprises of two courses of duration 10 days and 8 days each.  It is made up of set exercises in machining, fitting, sheet metal work, welding and electrical services.  This training is conducted at the Mechanical Engineering Workshop of the Open University, Nawala, Nugegoda.  The workshop training mainly involves the imparting of practical skills and of knowledge and behaviour associated with them.

EXEMPTION PROCEDURE

The Specific Industrial Training comprises of two courses of duration 15 weeks each.  This training is organized in recognized industrial establishments.  Students undergo practical training in industry under the supervision of the Training Engineer of the Open University and by a responsible person from the establishment.  Students maintain records of training and on completion of training forward a report on training for assessment of his/her training assignment. 

In this training, student is exposed to the working world there he understands the difference between a University learning and a place of work, between the different methods of production, division of labour and hierarchical structure of responsibility levels in industry.
