The government has recognized the socio economic significance of the small business sector and has instituted policies to encourage and promote small business activities.

  • Foundation Courses for Science and Engineering Degree Programmes

    Science and Engineering Foundation Courses are designed to encourage those without the basic entry qualifications to pursue higher studies in Science and Engineering Technology to achieve such qualifications. Courses are delivered according to the Sri Lanka Qualification Framework (SLQF) Guidelines and will be of two-year duration. The credit content of courses is thirty (30) per each level, which will include six (6) courses, each of five (5) credit weightage totaling up to ten (10) credit of courses each for a discipline. The main disciplines are Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics. The courses will be offered jointly by the Faculty of Natural Sciences and the Faculty of Engineering Technology through the Foundation Academic Unit of the University.

  • International Course on Online Tutoring and Mentoring

    The Centre for Educational Technology and Media (CETMe) of The Open University of Sri Lanka (OUSL) offers a six weeks fully online course on Online Tutoring and Mentoring. This course has been developed using a learner-centred Community of Practice Model where participants will reflect on their own practice and explore new ways in collaborating in an online learning environment.

  • Master of Science Degree in Medical Entomology and Applied Parasitology

    The Programme in Master of Science Degree in Medical Entomology and Applied Parasitology is designed for biologists, veterinarians and medical personnel who wish to develop their knowledge and skills in a comprehensive range of aspects covering Medical Entomology and Parasitology. This programme consists of a broad range of modules that cater to persons currently engaged or seeking careers in health-related public and private sectors, research, academia and for further postgraduate study. The programme is offered once, every two academic years.

  • Master of Science in Environmental Science

    The Master of Science in Environmental Sciences [MSc in Env. Sc.] is a programme of study developed in recognition of the importance of environmental concerns in today's world.The programme aims to provide academic knowledge and training needed to tackle environmental problems through a multi-disciplinary approach. The MSc (Env.Sci) programme involves courses from four faculties (Natural Sciences, Engineering Technology, Humanities and Social Sciences & Education) of the OUSL. This represents the multi -disciplinary nature of the programme.

  • Master of Technology - Apparel production and Management

    This program is designed with emphasis on the apparel sector, to produce executive managers who will successfully manage and lead industrial or national organizations in the manufacturing field. It provides knowledge to understand the behavior of global operation systems and methods of adapting that knowledge to the local industry. The program could be completed either by research or course option

  • Plant Breeding Techniques (Short Course)

    Plant breeding is the art and science of changing the genetics of plants for the benefit of humankind. It can be achieved through many different techniques ranging from simply selecting plants with desirable characteristics for propagation, to more complicated tissue culture and molecular techniques.

    This course is designed to: educate the participants on current practices in post-harvest technology of fruits, vegetables and flowers; provide hands-on experience to personnel working within the sector on post-harvest physiology of fresh produce; enhance knowledge and skills on biological post-harvest treatments used to reduce post-harvest diseases; upgrade the agriculture industry of Sri Lanka through knowledge transfer and skill development on appropriate horticultural practices.
