Parents of children with special needs face a problematic situation in helping their children to overcome the difficulties and barriers in learning and development. The concept of Education for All (EFA) cannot be achieved without considering the needs of children with special needs. The school and home environments both need to collaborate in developing potential of children with special needs. As the parents play a vital role in educating their children with special needs, developing training or awareness programmes are needed to support them. However the available opportunities are limited in the country for proper education and training programmes for parents of children with special needs. The best method of educating parents of children with special needs is through developing short term courses rather than long term courses because the parents of children with special needs may not be able to dedicate their full time for such a long term course with their family commitments. The training from a short course obtained by the parents will provide variety of supports for learning and development of their children at home. Considering the above factors the Department of Special Needs Education has developed a "Short Course for Parents of Children with Special Needs".
