The course is designed for students who need the Korean language for general, practical or social purposes. Specially designed to facilitate language learning in a step-by-step format in a conducive learning environment, this course is ideal for complete beginners as well as those who wish to enhance their basic knowledge and understanding of the Korean language.

The course will be offered at two levels:

      1. Basic Level
      2. Intermediate Level

Regular face-to-face sessions will be conducted by the Department of Language Studies, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, the OUSL, Nawala, Nugegoda on Tuesdays (Basic Level) and Thursdays (Intermediate Level) from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon OR on Saturdays from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon (Basic Level) and from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. (Intermediate Level)

Printed texts and audio material will be provided.

Programme Content – (Basic Level)

Introduction to Hangeul – learning the Korean Alphabet.
Hangeul I - The basic six vowels and the basic five consonants.
Hangeul II - Four combined vowels and four consonants.
Hangeul III - Four vowel combinations and five aspirated consonants.
Hangeul IV - Seven vowel combinations and five tensed consonants.

      2. Jobs/Asking questions
      3. Phone numbers / birthdays
      4. Every day life
      5. Buying things
      6. Transportation and travel
      7. Hobbies
      8. Health
      9. Plans and appointments

Applicants should be over 18 years old. No formal qualifications are necessary. However, a basic knowledge of speaking and listening skills in English will be necessary to follow the Korean language courses.

Only 25 applicants will be entertained at the Colombo Regional Centre. Therefore, applications will be issued on first come, first served basis.

  • Those who wish to apply for the Basic Level should purchase application forms by calling over at the Public Relations Office, The Open University of Sri Lanka, Nawala, Nugegoda.

    Application fee is Rs. 350/=
  • Those who have completed the Basic Level and wish to enroll for the Intermediate Level need not apply. They can register directly to the Intermediate Level by paying the course fee and producing the Basic Level student Identity card at registration.
