The aims of this program are: to provide career and employment opportunities associated with laboratory science; to have baseline interactions with other members of the healthcare team; encourage clinical laboratory scientists to engage in more meaningful roles; to provide opportunities to develop knowledge and skills in testing technology in medical laboratory science for those who are already employed as medical laboratory technologists in the healthcare sectors.
The program's primary expectation is to create individuals who are professionally competent; who are able to develop and establish procedures for collecting, processing and analyzing biological specimens for laboratory investigations; who possess a commitment to life-long learning; who exhibit a sense of commitment to the ethical and humane aspects of patient care; who appreciate the need for research to develop knowledge of health, disease, healthcare management and education and who are able to recognize the role of the clinical laboratory scientist in the assurance of quality health care.
The Bachelor in MLS is a four year programme designed as follows: Level 3 - First Year; Level 4 - Second Year; Level 5 - Third year; Level 6 - Fourth year. The academic value of the courses for each of these years is 36 credits. To fulfill the General Degree in Bachelor of Medical Laboratory Sciences, a student should complete 108 Credits. Those who obtain Grade Point Average of 2.8 at the end of the Level 5 (for 72 credits) will be selected to Level 6. They are eligible to obtain the Bachelor of Medical Laboratory Sciences Special Degree (144 Credits). This curriculum embraces relevant basic sciences (Anatomy, Physiology, Biochemistry (basic and clinical), Physics and Chemistry, Statistics (general and medical statistics), Laboratory Instrumentation skills and general parasitology, microbiology, pathology and haematology as a foundation to the Level 3 and Level 4 in the degree programme. All specialized laboratory based teaching subjects such as Histopathology, Chemical Pathology, Advanced Clinical Haematology, Transfusion & Transplantation Science, Clinical Microbiology, Diagnostic Parasitology. Advanced Clinical Biochemistry, Molecular Biology and Cytogenetics, and Immuno-histochemistry will be offered in Level 5 and 6. Research Methodology (at Level 5) and the Research Project will be offered at Level 6.
