The Department of Legal Studies offers the Degree of Bachelor of Laws (LLB). The degree (which is of four academic years) is offered with the intention of teaching core courses in law required for the degree.

Entry Qualifications

In order to seek registration as a student of the LL.B. degree programme an applicant should have

(a) successfully completed any Open University Foundation Course at Levels 1 and 2; OR

(b) obtained FOUR PASSES, at the General Certificate of Education (Advanced Level) Examination (under the old syllabus which has 4 subjects) of which at least three passes should have been obtained at one sitting and the other subject should have been completed at another sitting; OR

 

(c) obtained three passes in core subjects at one sitting at the General Certificate of Education (Advanced Level) Examination (under the new syllabus which has 3 subjects); OR

(d) secured an equivalent or higher qualification acceptable to the Senate; OR

(e) be an Attorney-at-Law at the time of registration for the LL.B. Degree Programme.

2. Students with the relevant admission requirements will have to sit for an Admission Test, in order to obtain admission to the LL.B. programme.

 

5. A person with a degree in law from a foreign University which is recognised by the Open University is exempted from the Admission Test and may obtain direct registration for level 3 courses. He/she may also seek exemptions from specific courses in the programme as determined by the University. Such exemptions may be granted upto a maximum of half the credit requirements. Such candidates should note that when exemptions are granted for a course, a maximum of a “D” grade will be awarded for such course.

 

 

6. A Candidate must sit for the admission test at the Regional/Study centre where they have obtained/submitted the application.

 

All applicants are required to sit an admission test to gain entry into the programme.

An Attorney-at-Law may obtain direct admission to level 4 courses since exemptions could be claimed from level 3 courses and also from the admission test.

A person with a degree in law from a recognized foreign university may obtain direct admission to the programme and seek exemption from other courses. These exemptions will be granted after evaluation of the previous degree.

Teaching

 

The programme is conducted in Sinhala, Tamil and English media. However, this is subject to an adequate number of students being registered and qualified staff being available to conduct the programme in each medium. Students may provide answers to assignments in the language of their choice. However, the course material in levels 4, 5 and 6 may be available only in English. Apart from the standard course material, students are advised to read law reports, law journals and textbooks relevant to their courses and to make use of learning resources available in the university library. The Department of Language Studies of the Faculty conducts a special programme in English for Legal Studies. This programme has been designed to develop academic and professional skills in English that are necessary for lawyers. All students of the law programme are required to sit a grading test designed to ascertain their proficiency in the English language. Those who perform satisfactorily at the test are exempted from the English Course while the others are required to register for the English programme as a continuing education course with ½ credit rating.

3. Applications from candidates pending results are accepted. However they should produce certificates relating to the results of the examination at the time of registration. Similarly those who have successfully completed the Attorney’s Final Examination conducted by the Sri Lanka Law College may apply pending taking oaths but should have taken oaths as an Attorney at Law at the time of registration for the programme.

4. Applicants who apply on the basis of Attorney-at-Law qualifications are exempted from the Admission Test and may also claim exemption from courses in Level 3. He/she may therefore obtain direct registration for Level 4 courses. However, such applicants are subject to all other rules and regulations of the programme.
