Commonwealth Youth Programme (CYP)
The inauguration programme of the Commonwealth Youth Programme (CYP) was held on 08th January 2011 at the Piyasena Gamage auditorium of the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Skills Development. This programme is managed by the Department of Social Studies of the Open University of Sri Lanka in collaboration with the Commonwealth Secretariat in London and Ministry of Youth Affairs. The keynote address was made by Hon. Minister of Youth Affairs Dullus Alahapperuma and the event was also graced by the Acting Director of CYP in London, Mr Raj Kumar Bidla, Programme Manager of CYP Asia Region Miss Darshani Seneviratne and other distinguished invitees.

Microfinance for Poverty Eradication
The Department of Social Studies together with the Central Bank of Sri Lanka and Commonwealth of Learning launched a new educational programme titled "Microfinance for Poverty Eradication" for bankers on 26th July 2010 with the presence of Prof. Uma Coomarasawamy, Former Vice Chancellor of the Open University of Sri Lanka and Mr. W. M. Karunaratne, Assistant Governor of the Central Bank of Sri Lanka. This programme is a 03 month course which aims to improve the skills of bankers engaged in microfinance activities enabling them to become active participants in the poverty eradication process in the country. The course is offered in 05 centres i.e. Colombo, Anuradhapura, Jaffna, Batticaloa and Rathnapura with the contribution of more than 200 bankers.
