| The government of Sri Lanka, recognizing the need to ensure life-long learning and the right of every citizen to improve his/her life chances though access to higher education, established the Open University of Sri Lanka as a national single mode distance teaching university in 1980. |
PRESENT SITUATION

| Regional Education Services Division is responsible for planning implementing and overseeing the Regional Education Services.There There are six Regional Centres , eighteen Study Centres and six Teaching Centres situated island wide.According to the policy of OUSL, one Regional Centre should be situated in a province and one Study Centre must be situated in every district.But however according to the demand of the courses and the availability of students, some districts contain more centres above the norms.In Northern Province, there are no Study Centres or Teaching Centres in the districts such as Mulatheevu, Mannar and Killinochchi. Therefor, OUSL has planned to set up Study Centres in these districts.Further we don't have Study Centre in Mathale district, in place of that we have a teaching Centre there.In Sabaragamuwa,North Western and Uva provinces OUSL doesn't have Regional Centres. |
