About the Course

Certificate course for the laboratory technicians fulfils an essential need for the laboratory assistants in order to improve the efficiency in the laboratory. High efficiency in  a laboratory will require knowledgeable workers in the lab who are capable of maintaining quality work in the laboratory while ensuring the safety of themselves as well as those who work in the lab. The laboratory you are working in can be a research lab, a quality control lab, a lab in a university or a school lab. The responsibilities and the work expected from you may be slightly different from one another, may be specific, but the common tasks will be more or less the same. This course has been designed for the laboratory assistants in order to develop their knowledge and skills which is very much required to work efficiently in a laboratory. Good laboratory practices, some basic knowledge on acids, bases, salts, common organic solvents, common oxidants and reductants in the laboratory, basic understanding on radioisotopes will be given by the course.

Course outline

This course will cover the basic common concepts of chemistry required to work in a laboratory: atom and chemical bonding, measurement, accuracy and precision, simple calculations related to solution preparation, basics of acids and bases, oxidation and reduction, salts and their solubility, basics of radio isotopes and good laboratory practices. The emphasis of this course will be to provide you with the essential knowledge required to assist in the laboratory work. The practicals designed for the course will enhance your theory knowledge while providing you an opportunity to apply the concepts learned practically.

No prerequisites are required to follow the course.

Structure of the course

The course will consist of five units.

Unit I  : Bonding and stoicheometry (sessions 1-8)
Unit II : Measurement and errors (sessions 9-13)
Unit III: Acids and bases (sessions 14-19)
Unit IV: Organic molecules and radio isotopes (sessions 20-25)
Unit V : Safety and good laboratory practices (sessions 26-29)

A list and description of the sessions within each unit is provided with the unit.
