Welcome to the Department of HEALTH SCIENCES, which is the first ever department for Health Sciences in Sri Lankan university system……

With the demand for qualified professional degrees greater than ever, the OUSL initiated a Degree program for registered nurses in 17th June 1994, with the assistance from Canadian International Developmental Agency and the Athabasca University, Canada. From the inception of the Nursing degree program (1992), the Nursing Division which is named as the Department of Health Sciences since September 1996, was accommodated temporarily by the Faculty of Natural Sciences. To date, 17 years has passed.

Among 75 students of the first batch, 23 were graduated in 1997 under the guidance of the pioneer head Mrs. Chandra De Silva. Up to date around 460 graduates were produced under the headship of Mrs. Dilmi Aluwihare, Mrs. Hemamala Vithanarachchi and presently Mr. B. Sunil S. De Silva.

At the moment, the department is involved in offering three academic programs including a degree program, a diploma and a certificate course, Bachelor of Science in Nursing, Diploma in Nursing and Certificate course in Home Based Care for Elderly. It is a pride of Department of Health Sciences to announce that two new degree programs will be starting shortly. These include Bachelor of Pharmacy and Bachelor of Medical Laboratory Sciences.

In general, all three degree programs will be offered for registered health professionals practicing in the country. The general objective is to make them more competent and knowledgeable in their respective professions as this personal development will ensure improvements in quality of national health services.
