The Open University of Sri Lanka, began its Academic Activities in Batticaloa from 1988. It was then a “Study Centre’ only. In 2008 it was upgraded as a ‘Regional Centre’ . Today it has evolved into an Institution, situated at No. 23, New Road, Batticaloa, capable of satisfying the educational requirements of the District.

It replaces the Traditional University setup with Open Distance Learning (ODL) Methodologies in multiple disciplines. The Batticaloa Regional Centre has served the students of Eastern Province for the last 30 years. These students had stopped their Tertiary Educations for various reasons and are now completing it.

The Open University Batticaloa Regional Centre has absolutely involved in producing a responsible set of citizens, who not only raise their own educational standards but also participate in the Regional Development Process.
